5 Important Life Skills to Explore with Your Child

As a parent, it’s your job to teach your child a range of important skills that will benefit them throughout life. The chances are, you’re probably already helping them develop their abilities naturally, just by showing them how to do simple things. However, if you’re looking for some specific life skills to explore, I have teamed up with a private nursery in Woking.

Cooking
As your child gets older, they will need to be able to prepare some simple meals without adult supervision, so why not start them young. Even the littlest of children can help out with the cooking. Show them how to turn on the oven and use the microwave, and when they’re a bit bigger, teach them how to safely use knives and other tools.
Socialising
Helping your child with their social skills in a relaxed environment will help them feel more comfortable speaking to people in more formal environments, like school or even work in the future. With that said, try and arrange plenty of playdates with different people and introduce them to your own friends so they become familiar chatting to people of different ages, not just other kids. You could also encourage them to join some extra-curricular activities where they will have further opportunities to meet new people.
Organisation
In order to succeed, your child will need to learn how to manage their own time and prioritise certain important tasks. There are lots of ways to promote organisation within your family, such as keeping a diary or pinning up a calendar and keeping everyone’s belongings neat and coordinated so that you all know where everything is. Encourage your child to prioritise their homework, ensuring they complete this first before leisure activities.
Household Chores
Eventually your child will have their own home, and they will need to know how to keep it clean and tidy. With that said, you should teach them how to fulfil certain chores, from laundry to hoovering and dusting. Start by encouraging them to keep their bedroom tidy, and then start to show them other jobs around the rest of the house.
Writing
Written communication is important, so try and help your child develop their writing skills. Perhaps you could try some creative writing activities, like re-writing the ending of a book. You should also encourage them to write their own birthday/Christmas cards and thank you cards if they’ve received a gift.
There are, of course, countless other skills your child can learn throughout their life, but the above five should certainly get you started and lead to other learning opportunities.
