Just How Far Can You Renovate A Property Without Vacating?

It’s not easy to renovate your property, most often because when you improve a certain area of your home, that zone is rendered unusable while construction takes place. It’s hard to sleep in a bedroom with a wall actively knocked through, through, or shower in a bathroom having its plumbing refitted.

Plumbing Is Essential

If your plumbing is in place, then you may be able to live in your property in the meantime. Remember access to hygienic sanitation and washroom facilities is essential, and so it’s best to vacate if you have only one bathroom being worked on or you’re refitting your entire plumbing circuit where water may be off for days at a time. You can possibly alternate this – such as by using a neighbour’s bathroom occasionally, purchasing large quantities of bottled water at a wholesaler, using a laundrette, and showering at your gym, especially if this is only for a few days. However, plumbing issues (not just bathroom remodels) are essential to plan around comfortable use, because otherwise, that’s not sustainable.

You Can Live Without Electricity

For a temporary period of up to a week, living without electricity is possible. From outside sources such as the aforementioned laundrette, using candles in the rooms you occupy (as they used to), spending some time to detach from your screens, or using mobile data to give you internet access, and eating takeout food (this will be more expensive), living without electricity while your home is rewired is possible. Just understand that with children, this can be much more of a problem, and some bathroom appliances such as shower units won’t work either, even if your plumbing can.

Think About Security & Safety

A home in the midst of renovation can be slightly less secure and safe than it otherwise would be. Breathing in building dust, maneuvering around debris or stored materials, and securing walls that have been knocked through from the outside can be difficult. You might still move to another area of the household (such as using a pull-out bed in your living room while your upstairs floor is worked on), but it’s important to consider how safe and feasible it is for you to remain there, especially if you have children or the elderly living with you.
