4 Kitchen Renovations You Should Never Try to DIY

Ah, the kitchen. It’s where burnt toast happens, people stand awkwardly at house parties pretending to help with the dishes, and ambitious cooking experiments occasionally go horribly wrong! These 4 Kitchen Renovations You Should Never Try to DIY are the main works of renovating that require advice / undergoing by a professional.

“This post is a partnered post and may contain affiliate links. These thoughts and opinions are in line with my own personal beliefs.”

So naturally, when it’s time to renovate, it feels like the perfect chance to channel that inner home improvement guru (besides, refreshing your bedroom is easy). After all, how hard can it be? Just a couple of YouTube tutorials later, and suddenly there’s a crowbar in hand and big dreams of knocking through walls and rewiring half the house.

Well, here’s the reality: some kitchen jobs have “professional only” written all over them in big, bold, flashing lights. No, really, there’s just some you should never do. So, with that said, let’s dive in without the right know-how and it could turn into a disaster pretty quick.

Step Away from the Wiring

There’s swapping out a dodgy lightbulb, and then there are rewiring circuits for ovens, fridges, and all those gadgets you don’t even use half the time. But the thing about kitchens is, they’re absolute electricity hogs, and messing around with wires behind plasterboard isn’t the Saturday afternoon project it might seem.

Sure, it’s all fun and games until there’s a spark, a blown fuse, or worse, the lights go out just as the roast is about to come out of the oven. UK regulations are strict on this one, for good reason. Certain kitchen electrics need to be signed off by a qualified electrician, seriously, you should never DIY this!

Think Twice About Plumbing

Ah, plumbing. The art of making sure water goes where it should and not all over the brand-new kitchen floor. Alright, so, what seems like a simple task of connecting a pipe or two can quickly spiral into a full-blown crisis, complete with frantic towel grabbing and a soggy bottom!

Remember that kitchens are packed with plumbing needs, from sinks and dishwashers to fridges with fancy ice dispensers. It’s more than what people realise. So, basically, just one wrong move, and you’re not just dealing with a minor drip. Water has a nasty habit of sneaking under cabinets and behind walls, setting the stage for mould, warped cupboards, and that suspicious smell you can’t quite place.

Smashing Down Walls?

Okay, seriously, who doesn’t love the idea of a big open-plan kitchen? There’s space to breathe, host, and dance around while waiting for pasta to boil. But before swinging a hammer through that wall, pause for a second. Some walls hold up more than just art print, they are the structural pillars of your house. Just because people on HGTV do it really doesn’t mean you should be doing it. Really, don’t do it!

Gas Work? Just Don’t

Are you moving a gas line or installing a new hob? Well, this one’s strictly off-limits for amateurs. Actually, for everyone who isn’t a professional. So, gas doesn’t forgive mistakes. A leak could mean anything from a mild panic to a full-blown emergency involving flashing blue lights. By law, gas jobs need a Gas Safe registered engineer. End of story, and make sure you comply!

These 4 kitchen renovations you should never try to DIY are vital when considering remodelling your kitchen and dining areas. The areas that you don’t want to cut back and do yourself. The more cosmetic renovations are far easier to get involved with and don’t come with expensive or dangerous implications!
