Gruffalo Party- How to throw a themed Birthday!

Gruffalo Party with a child dressed as a gruffalo When Daisy turned 6 we celebrated her Birthday on Christmas Eve at home with some of our neighbours and friends from her class. Daisy was very much into the Gruffalo and asked for a gruffalo costume and other merchandise. So we threw a gruffalo themed party with a few handmade items thrown in.

Themed party food

Gruffalo party food With some ideas from my Pinterest board we themed some food around the story.

  • Popcorn – scrambled snake
  • Chocolate fingers – logpile house
  • Twiglets – knobbly knees
  • Chocolate iced gems – Nuts
  • Homemade chocolate Gruffalo cake
  • Grapes – poisonous warts
  • Oranges – orange eyes
  • Cooked pasta fusilli shapes for scrambled snake

Homemade Touches

We made use of our glue gun and made gruffalo themed sock puppets for party bags. I applied with the glue gun some felt toadstools onto a white tablecloth to give it a woodland feel.

Chocolate play dough For party activities they had gruffalo play dough, using my basic homemade play dough with added cocoa powder) we put out craft items such as matchsticks, feathers, Pom poms, google eyes etc to make gruffalo themed masterpieces.

We also had gruffalo shaped biscuits to decorate (basic biscuit recipe with gruffalo cookie cutter). You could use differen the animal cutters if you can’t get hold of a Gruffalo shaped cutter.

Lastly Dougie decorated a large cardboard box as a log-pile house and put holes in the box and filled it with feathers, sticks, toy snakes and also sweets so it was a secret surprise box! (Different take on a piñata!) This was very popular! Lastly we played musical statutes and pass the parcel.

Our daughter had a wonderful homemade party with her friends on a small budget. Please do let me know if you use any of our Gruffalo party ideas!
