Humble Toothbrush Review – Eco Update

Here we have our family of Humble Brushes!

The Humble Brush has a handle made from 100% biodegradable and sustainably-grown bamboo.  The bristles are made of nylon-6 bristles from Dupont.   So when you’re finished with your toothbrush you can cut the bristles off to be recycled and then pop the bamboo handle in the compost to breakdown or alternatively use as cleaning brushes or even as herb stakes in the garden.  The packaging is all really eco-friendly, the box and inside wrapper are made from recycled materials, and can be thrown out to compost or recycle.  The type of packaging that many companies can learn from.  If you think about the added plastic packaging that isn’t recyclable around a plastic toothbrush, it’s just all so utterly unnecessary.

So what is the world’s most sold bamboo toothbrush for adults and kids like?  First off for us adults.  I was a little apprehensive that maybe the bristles too soft to clean my teeth properly, being used to a medium toothbrush and definitely being guilty of brushing too hard. I really do feel like the bamboo toothbrush will help me from not brushing too hard in the future and ruining my enamel.  The Humble toothbrush has really made my teeth feel clean with none of the hard brushing action. One change I noticed was the change in feel of plastic to bamboo.  It did take me a few days to get used to having what I can describe as an ice lolly stick brushing past my lips.  Now I don’t even think about it!

I thought the kids maybe a little disappointed that they don’t have a plastic character toothbrush or some spinning battery operated toothbrush.  I explained to them about the terrifying statistics of plastic being dumped since the world consumes more than 3.6 billion plastic toothbrushes every year most of which end up in landfills and oceans!  As always they are so set on helping the planet, so they were really eager to open their boxes and get using them.  Teddy (a fan of pandas) is happy to share his bamboo with his bear!  The brushes are the perfect size for little mouths.

We also tried out the toothpaste which is white, soft and not abrasive. The mint flavour is mild and you don’t get the usual frothy lather that you get with other brands which can feel a little artificial.  It does leave your teeth clean and gives you a natural, fresh breath feel too. It also comes in a very handy travel size.

Myself and the kids are happy with our change and we will continue to use the Humble and re-order when next needed.  So, this is a case of every little helps; small changes in our use of plastics will help turn the tide on ocean damage, one step at a time.
