Hygge Home Decor This Christmas

Let’s talk Christmas decs, we pretty much all have a theme to them, whether it’s homemade sentimental keepsakes hanging from the tree, a set colour theme or maybe you prefer to have an eclectic mix of everything!

Whatever your style, we can all appreciate each others tastes and quirky Christmas traditions.  I have been itching to get decorating our home this year, as it’s our first Christmas in this house.  Though I’m not quite sure how it’s going to come together, as I have so many ideas lying around my head.  I have three themes which for me are just beautiful right now, and I’m somehow hopeful I can incorporate key elements of each theme into the rooms of our home.

12 Days of Christmas ~Inspired by this years opulent decor theme at Castle Howard it’s got my mind racing for bringing in some of their key designs into my existing decorations.  I’m thinking graceful swans, bird inspired pieces mixed with traditional toy cavalry drums.  I will be achieving this look with the help of Hobbycraft with their elegant swan hanging decorations for such a cheap price of £2.  I have also spotted elaborate bird baubles and deep coloured tapestry styled fabric decorations in department stores such as John Lewis and M&S.  This look may take a bit more to achieve as it may take a few stores to source from, or it could be something you build upon over a few years. Or maybe you’re the crafty type in which case sewing a 12 days of Christmas bunting or handmade fabric hanging decs would be really easily acheived. To match this look tie into your home plum and mulled fruit inspired fragranced candles.

Scandinavian Style ~. If you know me, then you will know that hygge is my thing.  I love the white washed, simple but wholesome look that the Scandinavias are so good at.  With the help of bringing it all into a homely look with fairy lights and candles glowing in every corner.

When it comes to lighting, play about with different lighting setups. Whether it’s using a round bulkhead light for your ceiling fittings, lampshades on side cabinets, and floor lamps to illuminate spaces when you don’t want the stark light from your ceiling lights.

For me this look is an easier one to achieve, it will be all about stars; paper or wooden ones making that simple understated look that just seems so effective.  Other must haves include wooden alpine houses, white washed pine cones, frosted mint felt wool garlands, stags and winter wooden bears, all brought together with pops of colour through green firs and red Nordic prints to break up the simplistic white clean living look.  I’m pretty sure that a few of these Scandi home pieces will continue to be in the home past December into next year’s Winter months to keep the house feeling warm and full of hygge .

I found Hobbycraft and The Range really affordable to achieve this look, and if you’re close to an Ikea they always bring the Scandinavian look through to their shops at affordable prices.  There is also a new player in really stunning homeware pieces right now and that’s Sainsbury’s Home.  Their nordic inspired throws, ornaments and other key pieces are beyond tempting right now and add a bit more glamour to your home.  Tie in this look with candle scents of Fig and Vanilla.

Bringing the Outside in ~ Not only is this look good for focusing on having less, spending less but it’s also using less plastic.   Having garlands and wreaths made out of real foliage, sprays of fir, holly and berries mingled with cones and fairy lights is just so traditional and warming.  A few simple twig decorations can also cross seamlessly over into the Scandi look.  Table centrepieces consisting of log pieces with soy pillar candles and cloches.  Another wholesome addition is garlands of oranges, bay leaves and cinnamon sticks. Simple to make, they smell amazing and are aesthetically pleasing.  And of course extra scent from warming apple, gingerbread or cinnamon candles is a must.
