I have been wanting to make a switch from the usual paraffin wax candles we have burnt in our home to a more eco-friendly toxin free alternative for a while now. One of the last candles I burnt left that black soot mark above my mantelpiece and reminded me that I really wanted to move away from burning candles that are derived from petroleum which for candle wax is basically the sludge waste of the crude oil. So I was really pleased when I came across Joe & Anna as they have all the information I needed to know that switching from paraffin based candles to a more natural plant based wax is cleaner and really the right way forward for cozying our family home.
I have found it fascinating finding out a bit of background about where Joe & Anna candle waxes are derived from and this has also reinforced why I want natural candles from now on. First off they are made from a mix of organic soy and coconut wax. Soy wax is fairly new to the candle market – it is a 100% natural wax made from the oil of soy beans and is a renewable resource. The benefits to soy wax are that they burn much slower than paraffin wax giving you a clean burn with no nasties in, yet producing a beautiful scent throw. Coconut wax is derived from coconut oil that goes through a process of hydrogenation. The coconut wax does not smell of coconuts, it has a neutral, natural wax scent. Also for more eco credentials coconut trees are considered a 3 generation tree; one coconut tree will produce for around 60 years, so there is no need to cut down the tree to obtain the coconut wax and thus bringing us a product that is from a plant based renewable source.
The subscription wax melt bag is a selection of 8 large hand poured (in England) coconut and soy wax melts. These melts get posted through your door in a natural, reusable hessian bag. The wax melts can be used in either in ceramic burners like I have or electric oil burners. They have an amazing scent throw, with a fully scented wax, no plug at the top, or running through the middle. What I liked about each individual melt is that it not only comes labelled with the fragrance scent but it describes a bit about what the mood of each fragrance is. I immediately chose two scents based on these descriptions. Lemongrass & Ginger – “sunlight bursting through trees” so this one I chose to melt in my kitchen and I melted Bergamot & Amber “a feeling of intense happiness ” in the living room. I found breaking a third of the wax melt off was more than enough to get a really good scent throw and I then have re-used until the scent has died down. I’m really looking forward to burning all 8 and I’m currently making my way through all the fragrances. I have been really happy with the fragrances and the fact that I can still smell the scent lingering in the room long after the tea light has gone out. The melt subscription bag has approximately 300 hours of fragrance per bag and the subscription renews itself on the 1st of each month for a cost of £18 plus shipping. Further details can be found on their subscription page here. Currently you can grab either a one month subscription for free or 20% across the Joe & Anna store to spend on purchases of their lovely candles, melts and diffusers. I certainly have my eye on a few of the candle jars as they really would be my perfect kind of hygge for going into Autumn and Winter. if you have any questions don’t hesitate to get in touch using their contact us page and all that is left to say in the words of Joe & Anna is “The next time you find yourself shopping for a candle, check what it’s made from and say no to paraffin wax.”
