Running A Household Despite The Added Costs Of Winter
Ask any child to sum up Christmas or the festive season they celebrate in one word, and they’ll likely settle on the same one – magic. Ask a parent the question, and quite possibly they’ll settle on this descriptor – expensive. The festive season is expensive no matter who you are or where you live, and it’s not just presents and gatherings that drain our wallets either.

The cold requires added heating, the need to pay for more winter clothes, and of course, all the lovely food you eat if you’re lucky enough to enjoy a special dinner or two. We can’t list out many more costs because we’d be here all day, but your bank statements are likely familiar with them. Of course, the festive period is the best time to spend money anyway, because what good is money for if it can’t be applied to a nice time with your loved ones?
Either way, reducing some of these tired costs over time would be nice, if only to grant us a little sanity. Let’s consider, then, how to run a household despite the added costs of winter:

Heat The Person, Not The Room
As discussed, it’s expensive to heat your home. Even on a room-by-room basis, this is so. However, you are not a room. If you can heat yourself, then you can do so much more cheaply and conveniently. For example, filling your kettle and boiling it for hot-water bottles, spread among your family members and under blankets, can be a great method of watching television at night during a cold spell. You can also invest in electric blankets which are much cheaper to run and can heat more than one person simultaneously. Little smart conveniences like this add up and can help you limit your heating budget.
Low & Long Heating
It may seem as though blasting the heating on full is the only reasonable option during the depths of winter, but that’s not the case. You can also heat on a low setting for longer, letting the heat build up in the room, and containing it by closing all UPVC windows and doors and with the help of draught excluders too. This is cheaper in the long run, while also providing that comfort you’re looking for. You can also set timers on your heaters to only switch on at certain times, which can limit the expenditure you make.
Last-Minute Promotions
The festive period is a fantastic time for last-minute promotions and deal hunting. Many stores are not only trying to sell for events like Christmas but also to get rid of all their festive stock before the new year begins and it becomes functionally worthless except at a deep discount. As such, you might even decide to celebrate a little later this year or to buy closer to the deadline than most people are comfortable with.
For example, you might enjoy a different style of food on the main day, and then eat a more traditional meal later at a highly discounted cost. It’s amazing how much leeway you’re given when paying for items slightly off the traditional schedule, just as you would expect to pay much less when travelling out of season. It’s a good way to sustain the experience you hope to give your family, while also saving a pretty penny. So don’t be ashamed to try something more unique, in fact, it shows a great deal of discipline and wisdom.
With this advice, we hope you can run a household more easily despite the added costs of winter.
