September Activities for Kids

A little later than planned but not as late as my August activities post was! Welcome to my September activities for kids, seasonal play blog post!

Every month of 2021 I have put together some simple ideas for you and your children to make and create together at home. If you’re new to my seasonal activities post then welcome! Each month we share a mixture of indoor, outdoor ideas, recipes and resources.

The reason I decided to start sharing seasonal play ideas came from my love of the change of seasons. I love to note and celebrate the seasons in terms of nature, decor, food, and everything in between. Mix that with my childcare background and this monthly post became a place to produce some inspiration for kids activities for every month of the year.

Hello September, you are one of my most favourite months of the year! It’s such a beautiful time for nature with everything in late Summer abundance from apples, veggies and berries to the early signs of autumn surrounding us. It gives me all the hygge feels of which I want to translate down to this month’s September kids activities.

This month I have included a few resources that have been on my blog for a while that I want to re-share, a few new activities, some free printables for you to download and lastly an Autumnal shift in my resources section at the end.

September Activities for Kids

Indoor Activities

As always when I share my indoor activities they mostly can be created outdoors on good weather days. Thus helping to reduce mess inside and I always find play extends more when taken outdoors. That said there are always a few rainy days in a month where activities like these are handy to do indoors.

Autumn Handprint Bunting

All you need is

Kids paint in autumnal colours
White Card or paper
Brown pen
Scissors
String / Wool

As you can see from the picture this activity is self explanatory! Paint the child’s hand and let them do some handprints on white card or paper. Then either get them to draw the acorn hats / leaf veins and cut them out themselves if they’re able. It’s a pretty way to seasonally decorate a play area or their bedroom once the bunting is threaded and ready to hang.

Autumn Pasta Necklace

This is a great threading activity for encouraging fine motor skills. It’s a nostalgic activity that takes me back to my own childhood rainy day activities.

All you need is

Penne Pasta
Autumnal Paint colours
String

Owl Pizza Bagels

These make for a speedy twist on homemade pizzas. Also without realising it, these bagels ended up with a bit of a food art twist by resembling an owl! These first appeared on my easy kids lunch ideas blog post but I thought it nice that they make an appearance for this September activities for kids post too.

All you need is:

Bagels
Pizza sauce
Cheese / Mozzarella
Crudités
Pizza toppings

I always have a batch of hidden veggie pizza /pasta sauce on hand in the fridge / freezer. See my tortilla pizza recipe with details on how to make a speedy hidden tomato based sauce. You could also use tomato puree / jar of pizza sauce with some dried herbs if you’re stuck for time. I tend to lightly toast the bagels under the grill and then add on their chosen toppings and bake in the oven on a moderate setting for about 10 minutes until the cheese is melted and golden.

Harvest Festival Snack Time

It’s been years since I have been to a school harvest festival assembly. I used to love going to our children’s previous school music assemblies. Thankfully our kids do have a harvest festival without parents so at least they get to take in some food to help our local food banks, which is the main thing. We also have a few books at home that touch on how important harvest time is for our food supplies over the winter.

This snack just makes me think of harvest time and my kids are absolutely loving cheese and crackers with fruit at the moment when they get in from school. I also have a halloween twist on this snack ready for next month’s seasonal post.

All you need is:

Cheese

Apple

Cheese crackers

I have this homemade cheese savoury biscuit recipe that is very similar to mini cheddars if you fancy making some homemade biscuits with your little ones.

Outdoor Activities

Autumn Mud Kitchen Recipes

Our mud kitchen is one of the most used resource this year in our garden. I decided to create some mud kitchen recipes which I will share with you over the coming months depending on the season of course! If you don’t have a mud kitchen, a tray or old wash basin with pots and pans will work fine as an alternative.

These recipes come as a free printable for you to download. This month we have created an autumn soup and apple pie mud kitchen recipe.

Autumn Toddler Sensory Tuff Tray

We started this activity outdoors by going and finding some nature bits to put in here. We then did the rest of the activity indoors as the weather was rather windy but ideally we would have done this outdoors. It’s perfect for little ones to explore the start of autumn on a large play tray.

All you need is:

Tuff Tray or food tray
Schleich animals / farm animals / wooden resources / Happyland figures
Autumnal loose parts for play such as pinecones, conkers and leaves.

Note – We drilled our conkers and threaded them into a hoop as our toddler liked to put things in her mouth when exploring!

Autumn Bucket List

I’m hopeful that we will do an Autumn scavenger hunt in the next few weeks and we will share that resource once we do, so watch this space! For now I have this Autumn bucket list which always gets me and the kids excited for the new season ahead. You can download yours here
