The Benefits of Journaling for Children
If your child is looking for an outlet to express their feelings, there’s a lot to be said about keeping a diary or journal. Having a place to write down your thoughts has been spoken about countless times in history as being a big benefit to children. Here are some benefits of journaling for children that this prep school in Edgbaston shares with us.

Gives children a place to vent
Not everything your child experiences has to be shared with their parents – they may feel uncomfortable about sharing their thoughts but they’d like a private space to keep it in. A diary can therefore help children come to terms with their emotions and be able to understand their thought processes in a different way.
Improves their creative writing skills
A child writing each day is only going to benefit in an educational sense. They’re improving their writing skills in general, as they pick up new words and grammar to help them along. They’re also testing their creative writing skills in exploring how they can write with a curious mind, and build their own thoughts and feelings from it.
Improves their communication skills
A journal will effectively be a place for children to speak out to the world, only in the form of pen and paper. This will help your child become better communicators and seek out ways to express their own feelings in new ways. What they learn from writing can be transferred to when they’re talking about their thoughts in conversation, and even in their own body language.
Teaches children about resilience
A lot of a person’s thought process is in a better frame of mind after writing down exactly what they’re feeling and what they can do to improve themselves. Improving on this will help children understand their own ways of managing their mental health, and thus building on their skills in resilience and discipline.
