Your home should be a haven for your kids and family to feel safe and comfortable. However, this is not always the case. Over 6,000 people suffer from home accidents every year, with approximately 2.7 million required to visit the local accident and emergency department for support. Since the COVID-19 outbreak last year, many Brits are spending more time at home than usual, making home safety-critical.

Here are simple ways to maintain a safe home environment for yourself and your family.

  1. Mind the hot water

You may understand the need to protect your children from the risk of drowning in the bathtub, but do you know they are also at risk of incurring severe burns from hot water? A child exposed to about 60 degrees celsius water can suffer burns in less than five seconds. Let your child take a warm bath in 48 degrees celsius water to prevent burns. Additionally, test the water temperature before placing them in the tub. With about 65% of kids aged four and younger suffering from scald burns every year, it wouldn’t do any harm to double-check your water temperature.

  1. Keep an eye on your windows

More than 4000 kids end up in the emergency room due to falling through a window. It is vital to install some window guards to prevent your kids from tumbling out of them. Select bar rows that don’t extend more than four inches and attach screws to either side of your window frames. This way, you can easily unscrew them during an emergency. Toddlers and babies also risk being strangled by blinds, and shades cords, so keep a healthy distance between them. If you need to use window coverings for your windows, go for cordless options for your children’s bedroom.  Half Price Blinds should have something suitable for you.

  1. Keep away intruders

When an intruder breaks into your home, they don’t only steal your belongings but also your sense of security. An ONS crime survey has shown that one in every hundred houses in the UK is robbed every year, with London reporting 14.8 break-in incidents per every 1000 households in the capital. You might want to secure your home entryways and windows to forestall any intrusion attempts. You should consult your local commercial locksmith for advice on the best options to ensure your home and keep your family and belongings safe.

  1. Prevent falls

About 60% of falls occur in the home, resulting in approximately 20,000 deaths among seniors aged 65 and above every year. However, young children are also at risk just as their seniors, which is why you should take practical steps to prevent falls. You can do this by ensuring hazards such as cords and toys are safely stored away. Ensure your throw rugs are firmly placed or get rid of them entirely. You should also keep your stairs decluttered and install firm handrails for support. Poor lighting causes poor visibility, which leads to falls; therefore, provide adequate lighting in and around the house. Also, keep your bathroom floors dry.

Keeping your family safe is vital! Although it can be a daunting task, adopting the measures above puts you on the right track.
