Lean Into The Original Design

It is not always as easy if you’re living in a new build, but if you have an older home that has unique features or you’ve uncovered original aspects of the home such as fireplaces or tiled flooring, then working with what is already there and restoring it if required is an easy way to bring back some character to your home. There was a trend in previous generations to cover up anything old and replace it with what was in style at that period. Still, more and more homeowners are now seeing the beauty in uncovering traditional features and making them the centrepiece of their home.

Add Colour

Pops of colour can be instrumental in giving your home character. Whether it’s a feature wall, artwork, a new Sofa in a bright colour or carefully chosen accessories, colour is the ideal way to add an exciting element to your home. The beauty of colour is that you can add as much or as little as you like in so many different ways. However, avoid having too many colours on the go in one room, stick to 3 colours and use the 60-30-10 rule; 60% of the room should be the primary colour, 30% the secondary complementary colour and 10% a splash of an accent colour to make it pop. So it could be that you use 60% grey, 30% white and 10% hot pink accents.

Now, this is where things can get interesting. Find any unused space in your home and look at what you can do to add character. It could be for elaborate panelling on a plain wall to give it definition and depth before adding a feature sideboard and display in front of it. Or you can add open shelving in alcoves in a kitchen, create a reading nook or corner in front of a narrow window, or you can even utilise under stair space that isn’t quite big enough to create a purpose-built pet bed or display cabinet, for example.
