5 Benefits of Sports in School
Physical Education (PE) is a compulsory part of the UK curriculum for much of a child’s education. It’s
important for various reasons, most predominantly because it helps with a child’s health and fitness.
PE lessons also provide children with an opportunity to develop a variety of key skills that they can
carry through life. I have teamed up with a pre-school in London to share some more information on
the advantages of sports in schools.

A Welcome Break
Spending all day, every day sat at a desk in a classroom would be very tedious for young people and
they would likely lose interest and not be able to concentrate. Subjects like PE, drama and music
provide a welcome break for youngsters and allow them to mix up their routine.
Improves Confidence
When children score a goal, beat a personal best, or win a match, they receive a well-deserved self-
esteem boost. This is ideal because a confident child may feel more comfortable raising their hand in
lessons and engaging in classroom discussions, as well as building relationships with their peers and
teachers.
Better Sleep
Sport, and exercise in general, can help reduce stress due to the chemicals that are released in the
brain. As a result, sport can help children relax and the fresh air the experience when running
around outdoors can help promote a good night’s sleep.
Builds Relationships
Being part of a team and working towards a common goal helps children build strong relationships
with their peers, and they can return to the classroom with a sense of camaraderie and friendship.
Self-Reflection
Sport gives children an opportunity to practise self-reflection. They can evaluate their own
performance during a match and come up with some ways they can improve next time. This is a
great skill that will come in handy when they eventually start a career.
I fortunately had a really good experience of sport in school and try to encourage my own children to be open minded in trying out new sports in PE and in after school clubs for all the reasons discussed above. What kind of experience do you or your chid have with sports in school? I would love to hear your thoughts in the comments box below.
