How to Raise a Polite Child
Raising a polite child is not just about teaching them to say “please” and “thank you.” Politeness
reflects respect, empathy, and good manners. Read on for plenty of tips from a private school on
nurturing politeness in your child, helping them develop into courteous and considerate individuals.

1. Lead by Example
   Children learn by observing their parents and caregivers. To instil politeness, be a role model of
   polite behaviour. Use courteous language, demonstrate kindness, and practice good manners in
   your daily interactions. Your child is more likely to mimic your actions.
2. Teach Empathy
   Empathy is at the core of politeness. Encourage your child to consider the feelings of others. Talk to
   them about how their words and actions can affect people. Encourage empathy by discussing
   different perspectives and feelings in various situations.
3. Use the “Magic Words”
   Teach your child the “magic words” such as “please,” “thank you,” “excuse me,” and “I’m sorry.”
   Explain when and how to use them, so they understand the importance of these phrases in
   communication.
4. Set Expectations and Boundaries
   Establish clear expectations for behaviour and boundaries in your home. Let your child know what is
   considered polite behaviour and what is not. Be consistent in enforcing these rules.
5. Practice Active Listening
   Encourage your child to listen actively when others are speaking. Teach them not to interrupt and to
   wait for their turn to speak. Show them that you value their thoughts and feelings by giving them
   your full attention when they speak.
6. Teach Respect for Elders
   Politeness often involves showing respect to elders, where respect is warranted. Remind them to greet and say goodbye to older family but also remember respect is a two-way thing no matter what age.
7. Table Manners
   Teaching table manners is an important aspect of how to raise a polite child. By working out what table manners are expected around your own family table they will hopefully learn for when eating around others. Eating together as a family provides an excellent opportunity to practice these skills.
8. Encourage Gratitude
   Help your child develop a sense of gratitude by regularly expressing thanks for the things they have
   and the kind actions of others. You can start a family gratitude journal or discuss things you’re
   grateful for during dinner.
9. Role-Play Scenarios. Role-playing different social situations can be a fun and educational way to teach politeness. Act out scenarios where politeness is required, such as greeting guests, resolving conflicts, or asking for help.

10. Provide Positive Feedback
    Reinforce polite behaviour with positive feedback. Praise your child when they demonstrate good
    manners and let them know how proud you are of their efforts.
11. Correct Politely
    When your child makes a polite mistake, correct them gently. Avoid scolding or embarrassing them.
    Instead, calmly explain what they did wrong and offer guidance on how to handle the situation more
    politely in the future.
    Raising a polite child is an ongoing process that requires patience and consistent guidance. By
    modelling polite behaviour, teaching empathy, and providing opportunities for practice, you can
    help your child develop into a courteous and considerate individual. Remember that politeness goes
    beyond mere etiquette; it’s a reflection of empathy, respect, and kindness towards others.
