6 Girl Power Books for Kids – International Women’s Day

March is Women’s History Month and with International Women’s Day approaching, I wanted to share some inspiring girl power books for kids. Books that are jam packed full of iconic women who have challenged stereotypes, discrimination and patriarchy. Books on remarkable women who have paved the way for future generations.

Books and literature really help shape who we are and how we see the world. As soon as children learn to read, the books and stories they interact with impact their lives. This is why representation really matters. Books with diverse characters and heroines allow children the chance to see themselves within stories, put themselves into their shoes and be inspired. Books can increase your confidence, give you a positive outlook on life and help you discover your own potential.

We know that the voices of women have not always been at the forefront of history, even though women have always been shaping history. That’s why it’s so important for our youngest generation to be exposed to bold women in our global history. We highlight women’s stories this month knowing that we must make a conscious effort to include the stories of women in our libraries, classrooms and beyond in Women’s History Month.

Little Leaders Visionary Women Around The World by Vashti Harrison

The 40 women featured in this book looked at things differently, were often misunderstood, looked on as dreamers or even crazy. This book celebrates some of the unique accomplishments of women and is an informative and celebratory read for children and adults. Vashti shares each woman with a one page description and illustration, making it easy to read in bite sized chunks. Vashti shares unique and visionary scientists, artists, writers, leaders and innovators from around the world. This beautiful and informative book is more suited to KS 2/3 and middle grade readers.

Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls by Elena Favilli and Francesca Cavallo

Dream bigger, aim higher, fight harder and, when in doubt, remember you are right. This book has the same format as the little leaders series; presenting each girl / woman in a one page bedtime story with an illustration by one of 60 female artists from around the globe. Malala Yousafzai, Brenda Chapman, Maria Montessori, Jane Austin, Frida Kahlo and Michelle Obama are just a few of these amazing women who broke the mould. My daughter really enjoyed the length of the stories, the illustrations and the narrative. Suitable for age 8 plus KS2/3 Middle grade readers.

Goddess – 50 Goddesses, Spirits, Saints and other Female Figures who have Shaped Belief by Dr Jannina Ramirez

A remarkable book that focuses on female powers. The first thing you will note is the stunning illustrations. This book has just as much substance as there is style. Adults will learn so much alongside their children with this selection of goddesses who are well known in the west from Greek, Celtic and Norse mythology to those lesser known from West African, Indian and Native American mythology. Grouped under sections of ruling and guiding, new life, war and death, love and wisdom and animals and nature.

This collection of stories reflects every aspect of what it means to be alive. These female figures show us that we too have the ability to be inspiring and powerful. A fascinating book for children to immerse themselves in and to explore which goddesses they identify with the most.

If children had coffee tables this would be on it! Suitable for KS2/3 readers up to grown ups!

This lyrical book encourages you to believe in yourself, listen to yourself, listen to others and enjoy the journey. “It is not wishing to be different. It is learning to love being you.” This beautiful book is aimed at readers aged preschool – KS1.

Fantastically Great Women who Changed The World by Kate Pankhurst 

Kate, a descendent of suffragette Emmeline Pankhurst has created a set of wildly engaging books for primary aged children. This book should be a part of the National Curriculum. There is double page spread on each heroine, the likes of Marie Cure, Coco Chanel, Anne Frank and Rosa Parks are featured. Each one full of memorable facts, achievements, adventure and fun illustrations.

This book is aimed at KS1/2 readers but I was gifted this from a trusted friend who who has influenced my life, choices and parenting, so it was also much appreciated at aged 40!

Fantastically Great Women who Worked Wonders by Kate Pankhurst 

This edition of fantastically great women tells a young reader tales of courage, spectacular adventures and pioneering careers. From Junko Tabei climbing Everest to the Australian mermaid Annette Kellerman. We would love to add to our Kate Pankhurst collection with the book Fantastically great women who saved the planet! Suitable for KS1/2 readers.
