August Activities for Kids – Seasonal Play

August Activities for Kids

I know I can hear you cry it’s more than halfway through August and I’m only just publishing this month’s August Activities for kids. We have spent the last two weeks on a family holiday and so the preparation that goes into a family of 6 camping is pretty intense and then I wanted to switch off and enjoy some family time. Anyway, better late than never as they say!

This month I’m mostly revisiting some older activities that I have shared in previous years as we haven’t been home much to set up many new activities.

As usual our activities are designed for indoors and outdoors but at this time of the year you could take everything outdoors to do. We have kicked off our August activities for kids with some outdoor activities down on the beach.

Outdoor Activities

Beach in a Jar

  • Empty cake sprinkles plastic jar
  • Scavenger items from the beach

This is one of our favourite beach activities. Save up a plastic spice or cake sprinkle jar for a day at the beach. Mine really enjoy filling them up with sand, pebbles, water and seaweed. They make a mini beach in a jar, so simple.

Games on the Beach

I wrote a games post a while ago with a few activities that we enjoy playing whilst at the beach. Playing Noughts and crosses on the sand or sketching out a hopscotch grid in the sand is again simple but good fun!

For young children take a copy of yoga babies (linked in my resources below) to the beach and practice some simple yoga moves on the beach with a lovely view and fresh air.

Eco Glitter

In July’s activities for kids we shared our flower pressing activity with you. This month we have a lovely way to extend this activity by drying out some petals and using them for art projects / mud kitchen. This activity was inspired by the Joy Journal for magical everyday play

  • Rose Petals
  • Scissors
  • Jar
  • Eco glitter – optional

Once the petals are dry your little ones can practice fine motor skills by snipping small petals into the jar.

Ice Play

Freeze some of their favourite toys in water using moulds. We used a silicone muffin mould and some small plastic animals. Florence enjoyed using a pipette to squeeze warm water over the ice to free the animals back to their natural habitat!

Charity Shopping

Shopping never features as an activity in my monthly seasonal posts, but for those who are staying close to home this summer it’s a fun one to do. Take them for a wander to spend some pocket money and then bring them home to play with their new treasure/ finds. Its a cheaper and more eco way to shop then a souvenir/toy shop. Maybe your little one loves costume jewellery and wants to make up their own treasure box or maybe your little one is car /dino mad and can find some preloved ones. Or maybe find a new family board game. The best thing about this activity is you have no idea what you’re going to find until you’ve stepped inside the shop!

Outdoor Obstacle Course – The floor is lava!

Get the kids to construct an obstacle course and play the floor is lava. Also great for practicing their balance, gross motor function and problem solving skills.

Indoor Activities

Crab Waffles for Breakfast!

a waffle made like a crab

We love a bit of simple food art now and again to brighten our morning up and make the kids laugh. This one was inspired by all the crabs we see on holiday. In August in the UK it’s a very common sight along coastal towns for children to fill their buckets with crabs before releasing them back into the sea again.

Waffles (shop bought or homemade)

Fruit

We used shop bought waffles this time and Teddy and Florence were delighted with our rustic crabs that we made!

S’mores Dip

We have recently made a dessert platter for a sleepover we had with friends. It went down very well. We filled a wooden board with chocolate fingers, mini cookies, strawberries and mini meringues. In the middle of the dessert board we made a s’mores dip. The kids were like a swarm of locusts over the dip and loved it. It was a great alternative to s’mores just a little supervision is needed for little hands on the hot dish.

  • Heatproof dish
  • Chocolate
  • Marshmallows
  • Biscuits for dipping

We put a layer of chocolate in the bottom of the dish and then topped with marshmallows. Pop in the oven and cook until the marshmallows are slightly browned.

Indoor Den

a cosy den made by kids

in August we seem to be prone to some wet summer days in the UK. As it’s the holidays somedays we can adopt a slower pace. Our kids love a fort/den to watch a film in, read books, or play board games in there. A good one and a change from a screen is to pop on an audiobook whilst they eat lunch in the den.

I compiled a handy list of 20 audiobooks my lot have enjoyed in the past. This holiday we have been listening to Diary of the Wimpy Kid on our motorway travels and it really has made us chuckle. We have also really enjoyed playing UNO and so again this could be done in an indoor fort on a cozy day at home, or in your tent on a rainy camping trip.

Play Dough

I have recently set up a homemade play dough business Bear and Boo that draws on seasonal play. Head over to my Etsy store to see what is in stock this season. These kits make for a perfect way to entertain busy hands indoors and outdoors.
