“You are the bows from which your children as living arrows are sent forth” This week went by quickly which was fortunate as Teddy and I were really looking forward to a trip down to London to see relatives and to spend the day at the Natural History Museum in London.
Teddy loves to learn, find out endless facts about interesting artefacts and so he had asked if we could visit the museum and spend the weekend in London. Knowing how much he loves to soak up facts, I knew he would need most of the day just for the museum rather than numerous attractions.
We arrived in London on Friday evening and spent some time with my brother and sister. Then on Saturday just the two of us set off walking and riding the bus to the South Kensington entrance of the Natural History Museum. We were the first visitors to arrive on site as we were up so early!
I would recommend pre-booking (due to Covid) the earliest slot and getting to the front of the queue a little earlier than opening time as it meant we saw a reasonable amount without the crowds.
Being early meant we were the first visitors to step inside and so we got good photos of Hope the Blue Whale with only staff in the background. It was really impressive to walk into the main entrance when it was so quiet. The sunshine was streaming in and the building is just so impressive.
Teddy had a few exhibits on his list to spot after watching David Attenborough’s Natural History Museum Alive documentary. His favourite finds on the day were the Moa, Hope, Chi Chi the panda, Triceratops skull, the Dodo and Andy’s clock from CBeebies Dinosaur adventures!
I was pleased that the museum was easy to navigate without having to pay for guides and maps. We just stuck to visiting each coloured zone one at a time.
We enjoyed lunch in the cafe, the food was nice but it would be pricey for a family to eat there.
After lunch we saw a few more areas of the museum, purchased 2 novelty museum coins from the machines dotted around and visited the shop. Like most souvenir shops it was overpriced so just one keyring later we stepped outside and went on the carousel together.
It was so good to have this quality time together, chatting, holding hands and learning new things. It was also lovely for him to do a few little things that as a family of 6 we usually say no to for money reasons.
I have really enjoyed a few short visits to London this autumn and look forward to planning another in next Summer/Autumn to tick a few more things off the kids list.

Oh we love the National History museum and do not go nearly enough considering how close we are by train. Bonus points for being first in and getting that great photo. Looks like you had a wonderful time.
