Another Birthday in lockdown with Living Arrows 13/52

This week saw Finlay turn 15. I cannot believe that he is 15, I know its a cliche to say but time really does go by so fast. If you would have told me this time last year that Finlay would be celebrating yet another birthday in lockdown I would honestly have been surprised and a little depressed by the thought! This time last year we were blissfully unaware that we were in this for the long haul. Do you remember the indications that we would be back after the Easter holidays! That said Dougie at the time was pretty accurate and kept telling me more like a year or so… I couldn’t face that prospect at the time so I preferred being blissfully unaware instead.

Finlay was supposed to be spending his 15th birthday away from us in Iceland on a Geography field trip rather than having yet another birthday in lockdown.  It was such a shame seeing his disappointment last year when his trip was cancelled.

Fast forward a year and he has taken the majority of lockdown, homeschool and his Iceland trip being cancelled all in his stride. He is on the whole happy spending time with his family and has got used to not socialising with friends out of school, apart from the odd skate around the block with a friend as exercise.

We celebrated Finlay’s birthday over Friday after school and again on Saturday.  He chose a Taco Bell takeaway and a movie night on Friday night which was a nice treat for me not having to cook!  We all enjoyed watching the Netflix film ‘Yes Day’ which is a fun family movie and has definitely given our kids some worrying ideas to plan against us!  I’m hopeful they will forget otherwise we will be facing a yes day in the holidays.

Then on Saturday morning Dougie and I finished baking his cake. He was surprised that we made him a skateboard cake topped with the logo of one of his favourite skateboarding clothing brands. I’m hoping that this creation goes a little way towards making up for him having another lockdown birthday.

Birthday celebrations over we’re now looking towards Easter as we’re already on school holidays after 3 weeks back at school. We won’t be doing much over Easter as there are only a few places open locally. We visited one of them at the weekend and it was lovely and quiet. It was a good opportunity to take a few photos of the kids and we played 40 40 again with them. I think they’re going to want to play every time we head out for a family walk!

From today we are looking forward to the easing of the restrictions starting with being able to meet outdoors with one other household. It will be lovely for the kids to have some different company other than us!  Although we haven’t really made any plans to do so quite yet!

I’m sure it will make such a difference to a lot of families being able to meet family / friends they haven’t seen for a while. For us it’s a real game changer as we have been a little stuck under the rule of six, so to be able to meet another whole household will be something to celebrate when we do!
