Chickens, Flowers and Sledging with Living Arrows 7/52 (2021)

“You are the bows from which your children as living arrows are sent forth.” I am going to gloss over the longest week ever of homeschool this half term and move swiftly onto the better things… like chickens, flowers and sledging.

3 children sledging in the snow

We started the week off nicely with some sledging as we finally got proper snow! It was wonderful to enjoy sledging down a local hill with blue skies, a nice view of Yorkshire and what felt like brief normality.

3 children enjoying the snow

The snow and ice have hung around in small patches throughout the week and the kids have really enjoyed playing in the garden on our frozen flood water in between homeschool breaks. It’s nice for me to get some time to catch up on life admin whilst they’re outside letting of steam, albeit in small chunks of time due to the temperatures.

Like I said in the start of this post it was not only about sledging but also chickens and flowers. We have contemplated chickens for a few years and kept talking ourselves out of it. for various reasons. I wrote chickens as one of our family goals for 2021 so we just went for it when the opportunity arose. Possibly not the best thought out plan to get them whilst there is avian bird flu regulations in place but at least with this cold weather the coop we have will be sufficient.

All that said we were really excited for their arrival and the kids have really taken to them, even Flo. We have named them Mabel, Margot and Mimi and now we just need Rusty to behave and they will all fit in fine together I’m sure.

This week has ended nicely with not just chickens but with flowers too. We don’t go that big celebrating Valentine’s Day as a couple, we tend to mark it with a small gesture and include the kids. As it was on a Sunday and in lockdown we made a small effort of a nice breakfast of heart crumpets, flowers and small chocolates for gifts. We followed this with a lovely walk in the very bracing arctic winds.

If you’re on half term this week, I hope you enjoy your week away from Google classroom and Microsoft teams!

It’s so strange seeing you guys with the snow when we have been snow free for a good couple of weeks now. It looks like they had a great time! x

I am so so so jealous of the snow, you really could be in the alps in that second photo. Yay for chickens it is something I have toyed with for a while so will be interested to see how you find it and how much work they are. Hope you had a lovely half term x

The children all look so pleased with the chickens – I think my boys would be too terrified to even go near them! I hope you managed an enjoyable half term and are prepared to get back to the home learning tomorrow!

The way your little one is looking at that chicken makes my heart melt! I’ve always wanted chickens but I don’t think my dog would be happy with them, he’s far too boisterous and noisy, think they’d end up tramatised!

Haha! We went for it whilst our puppy is still young and hopefully he will just be used to them being here! X
