Every year, the winter seems to get worse. The cold is colder, and the wind is getting stronger. Don’t worry, it’s not just you imagining things. The winters are definitely getting more “excitable”. And, with all of this exciting weather, it means that there is more prep work to be carried out every autumn. Here are some jobs you might want to tackle before the colder days come to stay.

Clean the house

You may have completed a spring clean a few months ago. Or, once the winter weather disappeared, you ran out into the sunshine and didn’t give the house a second thought. We don’t blame you. However, you might want to give the house a good clean before the winter. This can be anything from keeping your bathroom clean to cleaning the carpets. The simple fact is, during the winter months, you and your family will be spending more time inside. In order to get the best out of your home, it should be nice and clean.

Clear the garden

If your garden got a lot of use over the summer, you will have to give it a good tidy up before the weather turns. This means packing away the patio furniture and any toys that might blow away. Yep, that means taking the trampoline down for the winter. You should also empty the hoses of any water and clear out any plants that bloom for the summer. The aim is to weatherproof the garden so that there is no damage caused and nothing ends up blowing five streets over. If you are a keen gardener and grow your own food, now is a great time to organise your fruit and veg for the winter.

Service the heating systems

There is a good chance that you have more than one way to heat your home if you live in a colder climate. Gas and oil central heating systems should be serviced every year to help them run well. However, if you have an open fire or a wood-burning stove, you might need to get a chimney sweep in to ensure that there are no blockages. Having some professionals come in and giving these important systems the once over can help keep you warm and your mind at ease. This is also a great time of the year to stock up on fuel. Fill those oil tanks, grab some logs, and be toasty.

Prepare for the holidays

From September onwards, there are a lot of things to be celebrated. From the first days of school to Halloween and Christmas, there is a lot happening. Although technically this isn’t a job, it is important to prepare for the holidays. Now is the time to decorate for the changing leaves, the chilly nights, and the frosty mornings. The simple fact is, the holidays always seem to swing around and catch us off guard, so we don’t enjoy them as much as we could. Let’s make this year different and be organised for all of the holidays that come our way.
