We all associate spring with cleaning and decluttering. After all, it is called ‘spring cleaning’. But realistically, you can have a big clean and declutter of your home whenever you want, no matter what the time of year. The best time to do it is when you feel ready and motivated to do it.
The problem is that it can be a pretty emotionally draining process, especially if it involves sorting out and potentially getting rid of items that hold sentimental value. Here are a few tips that could give you that little boost of motivation that you need to get going.

Do one room at a time.
Trying to declutter your whole home in one go is a recipe for disaster. It will overwhelm even the most motivated and organised of people. Go through your home one room at a time, giving yourself immediate goals. The feeling of satisfaction, when you have completely finished one room, will spur you to keep going. Don’t forget to get in touch with a skip hire company before you start so you have somewhere to put all your rubbish. Start off with the rooms that are the most cluttered, such as the loft or garage, before moving onto the less cluttered – get the worst out of the way.
Get rid of at least one item every day.
If doing one room at a time still feels too daunting, don’t worry. There are other ways you can still reduce the amount of clutter in your home. Why not try the 365 approach? This involves throwing away (or selling or donating) just one item a day that you wouldn’t otherwise get rid of – normal household rubbish doesn’t count though! Depending on the amount of clutter you have, you could make it two or even five items a day. Even the smallest of efforts can make a huge difference over time.
Ask for help from family and friends.
Decluttering is a demanding activity, both physically and emotionally. Call in favours from family and friends to help you and offer to pay them in pizza and beer! They can help to speed the job up, and if you have an irrational attachment to an item, they might be able to convince you that you don’t actually need it.
Hire a professional.
If you are really struggling, there are professional decluttering services available to help you. They will be able to sort out the valuables from the junk, and if you have a bit of an issue with holding onto things, this can help you psychologically.
Concentrate on the benefits.
We can all focus on the negatives – decluttering takes time, it can be messy, and you might have to part with items with sentimental value – but it is important to look at the positives. For example, it frees up more space in your home and can make everyday cleaning much easier. Many people also find that having a clear and clutter-free home does wonders for their mental health.
