How to Raise an Environmentally Conscious Child

How to Raise an Environmentally Conscious Child

Raise an Environmentally Conscious Child

With the effects of climate change at the forefront of media attention in recent years, you might be wondering what you can do to help do your bit to protect the planet. As a parent, one thing you can do is teach your child to respect the environment. This will take time and you will have to reiterate certain lessons until the message sinks in. Here are some tips on how to raise an environmentally conscious child from an independent prep school in Surrey.

Spend Time Outdoors

Helping your child develop a love of nature is a great place to start, because they will be more inclined to protect the environment if they enjoy it. So, head outdoors and explore. You could plant some seeds in the garden, walk through the woods, hunt for fossils at the coast, or take a camping trip at the weekend. Talk to your child about the world around us and how human behaviour is affecting it and what you can do to help.

Recycle

Teach your child about landfill sites and why they are bad for the environment. Explain why it’s important to recycle your waste properly so that it doesn’t end up on one of these sites, emitting toxic gases. To make it a more enjoyable experience, you could make a game out of organising the recycling in different categories. You should also try and teach your child the importance of reusing and upcycling items rather than throwing them away.

Reduce Energy Use

You will need to lead by example with this but try and encourage your child to cut down on the amount of electricity, heat, and water that they are using. For instance, they should turn off lights when they are no longer in a room, switch off their phone chargers when they are finished using them, and turn off the taps while they are brushing their teeth. There are lots of other ways to conserve energy, but small changes such as these will go a long way to protecting the planet and also reducing your bills.

I would love to hear your tips on how to raise an environmentally conscious child.
