Teaching Your Child to Use the Internet Safely

There’s no denying that the internet provides users with a variety of benefits, so much so that most
households, schools, and workplaces heavily depend on it. However, when it comes to our children,
who can be naïve about the dangers of the internet, it can be quite a dark place at times. With this in
mind, it’s important to try and teach your child about how to use the internet safely. Here are some

Educate Yourself

It will be difficult for you to teach your child about internet safety if you are unsure of some of the
dangers of the modern world. Find time to chat to your child about what websites and apps they
frequently use, and then do some research about what the potential threats are. Once you have a
better understanding, you will be in a better position to talk to your child about what you are or are
not comfortable with them doing on their smartphones and other digital devices.

Set Some Rules

Make sure your child understands the rules you have about their internet use, and why you have
established those rules. For instance, you may want them to only use the internet in communal
areas of the house so that you can keep an eye on them. Explain to them that there are lots of bad
people out there who sometimes pretend to be someone they’re not in order to inflict harm on
others, and your rules are set so that you can protect your child. Be prepared for a bit of a backlash
from your child but be sure to stand your ground.

Provide a Listening Ear

Let your child know that you are there for them no matter what. If there’s something they want to
talk to you about regarding the internet or otherwise, they should feel comfortable approaching
you. For instance, they may have been victim of cyberbullying, or witnessed it happening to
someone else. They should be able to come to you with their concerns without judgement so that
you can support them the best way possible.
