Choosing a school that is right for your child is a difficult process, with many factors to take into
consideration. You will need to think about travel time to school, inspection results, school facilities
and much more. This can cause a lot of stress for parents, so it is best to start your school research
as early as possible.

There may be several schools that are suitable for your child, so take your time to consider them all.
Once you have established a shortlist, you can then start to research in more detail. Search for
school league tables and Ofsted reports online, and look at individual school websites to learn about
their curriculum and values. You may also wish to speak to other parents about their personal
experience with each school.
Visit your chosen school
The best way to truly decide on a school is to visit. Try and arrange this visit on a normal school day.
This will give you a better insight of life at the school, compared with an open evening, where the
school is empty. When visiting prospective schools it is important to consider how welcoming the
staff and students are, how happy and engaged the students seem, how welcoming their indoors and outdoors spaces are and how clean and safe it feels.

When you find a school that ticks all of the boxes, don’t forget to look at the practical aspects of
school life. One of your biggest considerations should be your travel to and from school. Can you walk to school? Is there a bus that serves the school from your area? Or, if you plan to drive, where will you park? You may
also wish to team up with friends or neighbours to share the school run with you.
Consider your child’s opinions
The best place to start your school search is by talking to your child about what is important to them.
Discuss possible options and listen to your child’s opinions on each school. Children are less likely to
care about factors like school inspection results and will usually be more concerned about staying
with their friends, so try to take this into consideration when making your decision.
