Top Tips for Helping Your Child with their Homework

Homework enhances a child’s learning by allowing them to understand content faster. As we forget almost 50% of what we’re taught within an hour, homework plays the important role of consolidating all learning. We have joined a private sixth form in Reigate to share top tips for helping your child with their homework.

Demonstrate a Positive Attitude Towards Learning

As a parent, it all starts with you. Parents are primary role models for their children and their behaviour is picked up on. To develop a positive relationship with homework, show your child that you are interested in their work when helping them. Don’t make it apparent that you’re annoyed if you get stuck or share that you ‘hate homework’ as it will only make your child do the same.

Set-up A Study Area

Homework itself can be difficult but what’s worse is a room full of distractions and noise. To encourage your child to do their homework, set up an area where they can concentrate. This should be in an area that’s away from the main part of the house to minimise noise and contain minimal devices.

Don’t Do It for Them

While it’s important to help your child with their homework, they must do it themselves as otherwise, they will not learn. Homework is a form of independent study which helps teachers to determine a child’s understanding and highlight where further attention is needed. To help your child you may explain methods taught in class, redefine questions or run through a practice question together. Always make sure that homework is completed independently and be there to support your child when needed.

Be a Positive Role Model

Homework may seem unfair to children, particularly as we adults don’t have any. To be a positive role model, you can show your child how you juggle multiple things. This could be reading a book after your day or a project that you’re working on. This could be knitting or another job that provides an additional income.
