Top 10 things to do this Autumn

The start of September marks a few things for me; it’s my birthday month, the start of a new school year, often lovely warm days with chilly starts and finishes, a slower pace than the busy summer months and the start of Autumn. What’s not to love about Autumn? The beautiful shades of nature changing week by week, cozy knits, bowls of soup, mugs of pumpkin spice lattes/hot chocolates on a lovely fresh autumnal walk.  So with many reasons to love Autumn, here’s my favourites in a top ten list of what to do this Autumn to appreciate all that the season has to offer.

Decorate for Autumn – Whether using an autumn wreath, cozy scented candles, teeny pumpkins, pine cones, diy leaf fairy lights or autumnal coloured flowers around the home there are plenty of quick autumnal touches you can add to your home and doorstep.

Nature Crafts– Be it an Autumn sun catcher, painting with autumnal colours or an autumn sensory activity, there are plenty of Autumn craft ideas on pinterest. For us older ones I would also love to be able to focus on some time to learn how to crochet an Autumn nature inspired piece.

Bake a pie – We have been lucky enough to get our hands on some fab cooking apples that we can get endless supplies of stewed apples from to pop into a pie, crumble or porridge.  Top tip – cook up a big batch and then freeze portions for later use.

Autumn Scavenger Hunt – Make your Autumn walk that much more fun by printing off a scavenger hunt from Pinterest or making your own one.  The kids will love collecting treasures, you could always use a pumpkin bucket for them to collect their treasure in.

Stomp in leaves– Before they get all wet and messy get out to a park with huge old oaks and get stomping and throwing leaves.  It’s just good for the soul and can be combined with a trip for a pumpkin spice latte or hot chocolate for non coffee drinkers.  We often find ourselves being a little more frugal and take a flask of hot chocolate and an autumn baked offering with us.

Bake a ginger loaf or Parkin– In fact bake both!  Up here In Yorkshire, Parkin is a firm favourite local bake, if you haven’t tried it, you must, it’s just a perfect bonfire night speciality.  If baking isn’t your thing I can highly recommend Wrights Ginger Cake mix, it’s easy to follow and delicious.  It also means your home has that gingery scented smell.

Autumn Reading – Cuddle up with a throw when the kids are in a bed and read a book in the evening.    To encourage the kids go and take a look at Autumn themed books on your shelves such as the Gruffalo, Room on the broom, Autumn at Brambly Hedge or head down to the library and borrow some Autumnal themed books.

Make soup– We love pumpkin and squash in soup. It’s one of our kids’ favourite recipes of soups.

Stargaze– As the darker nights roll in and before it gets too cold head outside and take a look up!

Make some bird feeders or feed a hedgehog ready for hibernation months.
