What are the Three Main Learning Styles?

Everybody processes information in their own unique way; some of us prefer to read from books and take notes, while others prefer to see things in the flesh and experience a more hands-on approach. With regards to school children, the way in which they absorb information is referred to as a learning style. A prep school in Northwood have put together the following information on the three main learning styles, to help put parents in a better position to assist their children.

Visual Learners

If your child is most receptive to information that is portrayed to them through visual stimulation, such as illustrations, videos, and words on a page, they are probably a visual learner. If that’s the case, you should provide them with plenty of coloured pens and other writing materials so that they can write notes in a visually appealing manner, which will make it easier for them to remember.

Auditory Learners

Children who are auditory learners prefer to learn by listening, rather than reading or taking notes. They are naturally more talkative by nature and tend to refer audiobooks over traditional novels. When giving your child instructions, if they are an auditory learner, they will be more receptive to verbal directions rather than a bullet pointed list or something similar.

Kinaesthetic Learners

Kinaesthetic learners are typically drawn to more active subjects in school, such as science, art, drama, or PE. These are subjects which require them to move around, touch things and generally just experience things first-hand rather than reading about it online or listen to someone talking about it. If you think your child is a kinaesthetic learner, help them learn through activities and games.

So, now that you understand what the three main learning styles are, you should observe your child and try and determine which of these categories they fall into. Don’t be alarmed if they seem to display multiple different learning styles. By figuring this out, you will be more equipped to help them with their studies going forward.
