What We Are Reading Round-up!

This year our “what we are reading’ round up will slightly change in the fact the kids are going to write here their own book reviews. This will cut out my grown-up take on the books and also encourage some basic comprehension skills in our Tweens.

Finlay – 12

Jungle Book Adventures- Return to the Jungle by Bear Grylls.

Mak and his family get to go to the Wainganga River for his Dad’s job. A crazy man and his companions steal a baby elephant and Mak and his friend Diya pretend to go bird watching but are really venturing into the heart of the jungle on a mission to save a baby elephant and bring it back to its herd before the herd gets attacked by angry villagers, upset that their crops are destroyed by the elephants.
Mak and Diya get tested to their limits by the full power of the jungle. so if you want to know what happens next, you need to read it! This book would be brilliant for anyone interested in the great outdoors and learning how to survive in the harshest conditions.

Daisy -9 1/4

Tom Gates ‘Super Good Skills (almost)’ by Liz Pichon.

It’s about Tom and how he loves to do some doodling and drawings instead of doing his school work. I like this book because Tom has made some names up for his teachers. Mrs Worthington is Mrs Worthingtash, Mr Fullerman is ‘beady eye man’ because he has big eyes, and the headteacher Mr Keen is ‘red tomato’ because when he blows the whistle he goes really red! Mr Sprocit is called ‘break dance man’ because whenever he does break dancing he always breaks a bone!
I think that Tom Gates books are perfect for girls and boys aged between 7 and 10.

Oi Frog and Oi Goat by Kez Gray.
We have got several of his ‘Daisy’ books for our Daisy, so we knew they would be fun to read. We weren’t disappointed! If you haven’t come across them, they are perfect for preschoolers 3-5 years and are a great introduction to the world of rhyming.

Florence – 1
Are You There Little Fox? by Sam Taplin

Little ones will just love these textured pages with peep holes to try and find the elusive fox whilst exploring and learning about nature and other animals along the way. Florence’s face just lights up when we read this together!

One for the whole family

Lastly we have all enjoyed the picture book ‘Grandma’s House’ by Alice Melvin. This was a Christmas gift from Grandma! This book has such beautiful, intricate illustrations and something I can relate to from my own childhood memories of my Nanny’s house, and similarly my own children  who love exploring their Grandma’s house.
