Exploring STEM Subjects with Your Child
STEM subjects are the core parts of a child’s curriculum that will give them the foundations
of many key skills in life. These subjects – science, technology, engineering and maths
subjects – are the reason why we develop some of the most successful students in schools.
Exploring these subjects outside of school will reinforce the skills and knowledge your child
needs to go through life. Read on to find out how you can help your child with their STEM

Outdoor learning
This is a great way by showing your child about the world we live in. Science is all around
us, and the outside world can show your child the different animals we share the world with.
This is a perfect opportunity for you to talk about these animals, animal biology and nature
by bringing a picture book along with you. Identifying different birds, bugs and animals will
give your child the chance to discover what’s just on their doorstep.
Science experiments
All kids love having fun with mini science projects! You have the traditional vinegar and
bicarbonate of soda tricks, but there are so many others you can try out. Making liquid to
blow bubbles with, growing crystals, playing with magnets and making water obstacle
courses are also amazing ways of showing science in action to your child.
Baking
A fun and often messy activity is actually a great way of showing how science and
technology work in your home. There’s calculating exact grams of ingredients, setting the
temperature correctly on the oven, mixing the ingredients correctly and ensuring the cake is
cooked enough when it leaves the oven – all of these test your child’s STEM subject
knowledge. And the best part is your child can have a sweet treat as a reward after all their
hard work helping you!
