“You are the bows from which your children as living arrows are sent forth.” The little ups and downs of lockdown life has definitely been felt in our home this week. I really feel that this week has been a tale of two halves. The first half was quite testing, trying to get to grips with juggling home learning with everything else that needs doing in the home. By the latter end of the week our daily routine had definitely improved.
The weekdays have been long and fuelled by a mountain of laundry, constant feeding and swapping tech devices around the house. Weirdly in saying the days were long the actual week went by in a fast blur!
On Wednesday I felt that I was getting my head around how to manage the schooldays and we changed up our routine. This time around with it being Winter it seems better that we take more breaks and do learning in the morning and afternoon. After all, we’re not rushing this time to finish by lunchtime so we can enjoy the warm sunshine of the afternoon. It also means that the big two benefit from them not running wild all afternoon when they are still trying to work.
Teddy seemed to be happier with this way of working and I was really impressed with how hard he worked and I was especially impressed with a funny pirate poem he wrote. More breaks also means I can keep the house ticking over throughout the day and spend time with Flo and keep her busy with some activities for her to do.
The weekends are such a welcome change, which we all appreciate. Flo and I made bagels for the first time this weekend and we all enjoyed a walk together.
The biggest achievement of the week was that Florence learnt to ride her bike. She has gone from a balance bike to pedal bike in about 5 minutes! Her determination was both awesome and scary all rolled into one!
I know that these small ups and downs of lockdown are really very small in the scheme of things right now and I’m sure that we will find our groove again like last time.

It sounds like you have such a nice balance now. I think we’ve found our way with it but I just find it all so monotonous now – I really wasn’t cut out for being a teacher! x
I changed our routine a little and it helped so I need to try and do the same this week. The bagels look amazing and well done Flo! Such an achievement!
Glad to hear you’re finding a way to make it work for you. I think we might try a longer break in the middle of the day and splitting the work, at the moment we’re trying to get everything done in the morning but it’s a bit full on. Maybe more breaks are the answer for us too 🙂
And a big well done to Flo on the bike riding – my boys are 5 and 7 and still have stabilisers! They just have no interested in learning how to ride though so it’s a tough one, maybe 2021 will be their year!
I think the breaks help so I can also regain my patience and get a few jobs done. I’m sure they will get cycling soon x
