Shredded Wheat and Muesli Easter Nests

This shredded wheat and muesli Easter nests recipe is one I was going to share last Easter but never got around to doing so! I have already been making batches of these cakes as soon as mini eggs were back in stores. I will be sharing our latest recipe further down in this post.

The nostalgia of Chocolate Nests

Who doesn’t love a chocolate nest? I for one have fond memories of making and eating them as a child. Back in the day, we used to make them in various different ways. I can remember the old-school version with cocoa powder, syrup, and butter.

Then there were different cereal versions… Corn flakes, Rice Krispies, and shredded wheat versions. I certainly can remember having the non-Easter version at many a children’s party where it was a cornflake or Krispie variety!

Which brand of cereal works best

We love muesli for breakfast in this house, so we always have some on hand. We really like the taste sensation of finding a raisin amongst the chocolate. It adds an extra taste sensation to the shredded wheat, whilst also helping bind it all together. We find that the swiss style Alpen or supermarket-own branded version works best. Sugared and non-added sugar versions are available and either works fine for this recipe.

Shredded wheat or supermarket branded versions are fine. We buy the mini kinds of wheats and find they work easier to break up for this recipe plus the kids prefer eating them as cereal! We often buy our muesli and mini wheats from Aldi.

Let’s talk Chocolate?

Well, this depends on personal taste. We find by having a mix of both dark and milk chocolate works well! All dark is a little strong for our kids so having the dark and milk chocolate mix just works well. You can alter the recipe to just milk or dark of course. I have yet to try white chocolate, so I can’t report back on that yet

How to make Shredded Wheat and Museli Easter Nests

Note for exact measurements see the recipe guide further down.

Add your muesli to a mixing bowl. Pop your shredded wheat into a zip-lock bag and break down the pieces by bashing with a rolling pin and then add to the muesli.

Break up your chocolate into a pyrex bowl and place the bowl in a saucepan filled with boiling water. AKA a bain-marie.

Once the chocolate is melted, pour the dusty cereals into the chocolate and stir until coated.

Press the mixture into cupcake liners in a cupcake tin. Use a teaspoon to press and make a nest indentation.

Add in a mini egg or two and then place the tray into the fridge to chill and set.

Tips

Use leftover Easter egg chocolate

Use 50 / 50 dark and milk chocolate for a good flavour.

We find the Callebaut chocolate chips are well worth using when you can splash out on good-quality chocolate

Use mini shredded wheats instead of larger wheat biscuits.

Use cupcake liners to avoid nests sticking to tin.

Keep best and taste best when stored in the fridge.
